TACKLE REPORT

Tackle Report 2009

Again we are fortunate to be utilizing Shimano products this season and as expected with great success.

BLUE WATER

Rod - Starlo Stix 7’ Snapper spin heavy one piece 6–10kg outfit.
Reel - Saragosa 6000F

This combination has proven to be excellent; the rods are very hardy, light weight yet have the strength to handle large fish such as Queenfish, Tuna, Mackerel and GT’s.  The Saragosa 6000F reels have been designed for saltwater conditions (of which we put them through their paces) but they have been great.  They have an excellent gear ratio and drag system along with a very comfortable handle making the long casting sessions a pleasure (rather than a workout like others can do).

This combination has allowed anglers of ALL skill levels to enjoy their fishing and why not when you have excellent technology doing its job.  Highly recommended!

ESTUARY

BAITCASTER:
Rod - Core 6’ heavy 6–10kg
Reel - Core 100MG low profile 5 ball bearings, 6.2:1 gear ratio

An up market combination from Shimano presented beautifully and is a pleasure to use with plenty of strength and is very comfortable in the hand.

Rod - T-Curve Tournament 6’ heavy 6–10kg
Reel - Curado 200E7, 7 ball bearings, 7.0:1 gear ratio

The Tournament T-Curve range designed by Ian Miller has a very high reputation to uphold for presentation, strength and durability.  Matched with the ever reliable Curado this has been an excellent outfit and a pleasure to use.

SPINNING OUTFITS:
Rods - T-Curve Tournament 1.8m Medium spin 5–8kg.
Raider ll Barra spin 662  5–10kg

The first thing you see with these is the presentation, professionally bound and presented asking you to take me fishing and see what I can do for you. Well we have and there great, plenty of strength with some fish the likes of tuna handled with ease.

Reels – Saros 4000F

Again we could not go past the Saros 4000F, what a great little reel these are. We give them absolutely everything and to date including last year have not had a single problem (and that is saying something in our game).  Highly recommended.

BOAT RODS:
Rod - Aqua Tip 601 10kg.
Reels - Symetre 4000FJ

These we use predominately for our live baiting and again have proven to be very good.  A hardy outfit, suiting its application perfectly.  The Symetre reels we’ve used before and to date with these new models we have had no problems they are very similar to the Saros, another excellent reel.

FLY

Reel: Biocraft XT  LA910

We have also been able to give this reel a workout from one end of the scale to the other, with Tuna and large Queenfish taking us well into the backing to the subtle estuary fishing with Tarpon, Trevally, Barramundi, Mangrove Jack etc.

Again presentation plays a large role together with advanced gearing, braking systems and the high quality one way roller bearing races gives you the security and comfort to know that this equipment will stand up to the task very well indeed.

LURES COMMONLY USED
METALS:
Bumpa Bars – 35gm
Raiders 20gm & 40gm

BARRAMUNDI AND GENERAL ESTUARY LURES:
Killalure Flatz Rat 2
Barra Magnum – shallow or medium
Predatek Spoonbill
Gold Bomber
There are many different types of lures, it is more about what you do with them that counts.  At different times of the year we will use  floating / surface lures, suspending and sinking lures, depending on where the fish are in the water column but as a general rule the above will get you out of trouble (or into trouble).

POPPERS:
Smilin Jack (the best for us, light weight good hardware & very easy to work).

DEEP DIVERS:
Halco Scorpions 90- 120mm - Mullet colour
Again, Rapala’s, Tilsan, Reidys are all good as long as the action is good and also they have decent hardware on then they should be fine.  Most colours are OK with the blue, green, red/white or mullet coloured always being safe, 3–4m is normally enough depth.

PLASTICS:
Squidgy range – drop bear is a favourite
Snap Back 4” paddle tails White

We are currently having some fun with the Squidgy Boof Frog on Barramundi.  The Berkley range is also good.  There are simply a million on the market, the rule of thumb is as long as it has an action and the gig head is strong enough you’re in with a show.  There are a lot that don’t.  We use plastics in the 75–125mm range mostly.
