Brazil Trip - Amazon - Peacock Bass Expedition 2011When we arrived in Manaus in the heart of the Amazonas on the mighty Amazon river the view takes your breath away the river is about 5klm wide and has a real presence about it. We stay in the Lake Suites motel very nice indeed and await the morning when Marlon will pick us all up to start our adventure. He takes us out to the airport where we board a light aircraft to fly to Barcelos a small town well upstream from where we will then board the Tayacu II to start our adventure on the river itself.
Marlon Otero is the owner of Peacock Bass Expeditions, he runs two major floating Barco’s (for us two large motherships) catering for 8 and 14 passengers together with a floating hotel well upstream catering for 8 people, where you fly in by seaplane and each day venture out in well equipped boats to enjoy the wilderness and of course do some fantastic fishing.
The vessel we were on is the smaller of the motherships the Tayacu II very nice, comfortable, well staffed (approx. 10 staff to look after your every need); the cabins are clean, have A/C, roomy and have your own shower toilet. The main cabin has the dining room, entertainment facilities and a place to get together and have a chat over the day’s events.
As we venture upstream, we only slow down to get in the fishing boats being towed astern to venture out, there is a maximum of Two fishermen per boat with a guide who takes us out to fish into the maze of creeks, lakes and general water courses, then to meet up with the Tayacu II again further upstream for lunch or dinner All the food and drink you require is available either while fishing or on the main vessel, a lot being traditional local cuisine and fruits very nice.
The scenery is truly beautiful with native villages scattered here and there, then the birdlife and colours are simply amazing, giant otters, camin crocodiles, monkeys, etc the jungle is alive with all sorts of creatures. We venture up the Rio Negro River and several others but I have no idea where we are, for those that know, I liken this place to the MOTHER of all Jacky Jacky’s truly amazing. The fishing was maybe a little quiet due to the end of season and the rapidly raising water levels but still not too bad at all thank you very much. The style was very much like our barra fishing with surface strikes very common. The fish are mainly Peacock Bass or Tucunare, Acu the big one’s, Borboleta or butterfly bass and the speckled Paca. They are very aggressive but beautiful in colour ( and taste good as well, we had one for dinner ) I had to catch a couple of piranha’s and did so just to have a look at them, I did not know that there were so many different species of them, but they all have one thing in common TEETH. We swam in the river with these little fellows a couple of times no worries !!!!!!! (Only one person missing)
We continued to move upstream fishing as we went for a further four nights, the fishermen comprised five French fly fishermen and two Seisia fishermen (Australian for those who don’t know ) breakfast at 5.30am Umm not sure about this, (it was funny in the morning you arrive for brecky in Brazil good morning is Bom dia, France Bonjour, Australia it’s now Bon Morning, so it was Bom dia, Bonjour, Bon Morning Bon everything ! ) then we would come back for lunch then out again only to return and have a relaxing drink or two and then dinner and more stories.
Our second last night we had a beach Bar B Q prepared by the staff, it was just great, very relaxed. The trip was an adventure to remember, as long as you took the time to appreciate and have the awareness of what was around you. Marlon runs a very good business and I would recommend him to you all, he doesn’t speak a lot of English But heh I didn’t speak a lot of Portuguese either and we got on really well.
When I was enquiring about this trip there are many options and I chose this one due to the skipper / owner being a local man with vast knowledge and was keen to help. Have a look at www.pescanaamazonia.com.br you can feel safe that the business / Vessels and general trip are all of a good quality. I had a ball and everything that was advertised on the site was infact true and did happen. Have a look at some of the pics that will tell you all about my Amazon adventure.
